listen carefully - display type production

Listen carefully is a display typeface booklet that I designed specifically in relation to a simplified diagram of the human vocal cords. Having completed my self directed study which investigated Communication I wanted to learn more about the way we actually produce sound. This project presented me with the opportunity to explore this interest as well to complete some more illustrative based work that I thoroughly enjoy. When complete, the piece design of four sides of A3 that document the construction and editing of the type that make the phrase 'listen carefully'.

Greetings - Screen printed Infographics

This is a bar chart infographic that I designed and screen printed. It displays the many different ways people greeted me when they answered the phone, showing an investigation of a select 60 calls, the top version (gray stock) was chosen as a final.

Using my Mobile - Infographic Design

This piece is a double sided infographic poster that investigates the way I communicate and use my mobile on one side, whilst on the other it displays a visual representation of the components that make up communication. The contents can be deemed obscure in this format but this has remained a trend in the work I've developed for my self directed study. Some of these obscure visual statistics included 'Game level comparison' and 'Mobile location'.

'Lovely'

Lovely is a poster I designed in response to the motivation we have when in conversations. The poster has six different conversations on the reverse, all of which I recorded from phone calls and made into transcripts. I then cut out all of the text apart from the words that are used that are overly appreciative or sincere. These words highlight how we go about using certain words and approaches in order to achieve the aims of our enquiry or request.

Fakery Submisson - Dupe

Here are some pictures of the embossed front covers I completed on a range of different stocks. This cover was designed to appear as polished as possible in order to give the impression that the contents offered promise and intrigue. The whole concept of the idea was to trick the audience into opening the cover and then having to fold out a complete A0 piece of paper in order to reveal the only content which can be found beneath the very last fold. This included a very simple deffinition of the word 'Dupe'. Hence this was a very conceptual submission in which I always intended on making the audeince work and interact with the piece in order to find the answer. In this case, as the deffinition states, that if a person is duped they 'function as the tool of another'.

Craig Oldham - Music - Todays Talk

Some of what Craig said today really made sence to me and has made me think about how I should already or how I'm going to approach design.

Content + Form = Communication (either back your content completely and don't care about the way it's designed but it simply doesnt work the other way. Form(design) on it's own without valid content won't communicate!.

Personal opinion means nothing - You can't please everyone

'Limits are possibilities'

'Design is useless without a brief' - 'There is no such thing as a bad brief only a bad response to it'- 'The solultion is always in the brief'.

"NICE is an evil word.....stamp on it and destroy it, it means nothing" - It's your own fault for asking that open question. People are never going to be honest, they want to be nice, its human nature. Challenge them and ask for real advice, but always remember your still in the position to accept/reject criticism.

NEVER - Become a professional - Eg a plumber is called to fix a leak from a tap thats flooding your kitchen. He fixes it using a standard procedure, next week he'll have six of the same emergency call outs and he will use the same procedure to fix each problem. Imagine the same solutions being taught and practiced by every professional Graphic designer.... everything is going to become the same.

- "Tried and tested is not the way to design."
-"Walk in stupid to every job."
-"Ideas are whores."
-"Be true to yourself, why Bullshit?"
- "Talk to people as people not as a designer to a client"

Don't be scared about how you find your idea.
Don't be scared to get ideas wrong.
Don't be scared to share your ideas.
Your never going to be able to do it all on your own.

"The degree to which a designer has style
is
the degree to wchich they haven't solved the
Problem"

"Eat with your eyes"
